California Fire Relief

So many people have reached out to so many organizations asking how they can help those in need affected by the fires in the Los Angeles area that occurred in January, 2025.

In the sewing community, calls for quilts and blankets for those that have been affected by the fires and have lost everything, have been requested by several organizations.

One of those organizations, Wrap the World in Quilts, has answered the call and is hard at work filling the need. Not only are they accepting quilts and blankets, but emergency aid items such hygiene kits, diapers, food, water, N-95 masks, and more.

Wrap the World in Quilts began as an effort to collect “a few quilts” to send to a Ukrainian friend who became a refugee in 2022. The organization has grown to a worldwide effort to help families in distress in communities around the world! As of the writing of this article, their Quilt Counter shows 55,044 quilts have been collected and also shows just HOW much care and love has been sent to refugees in countries from Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Romania, the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, to the fire victims in Lahaina, Maui, and most recently in the L.A. area.

Their registration and tracking system has added technology to their quilt donation process. You can track your donation as well as the recipients being able to connect with the sender, as the quilts are scanned when they are received in their mailing center, and when they are delivered to the recipient.

The organization accepts quilts, blankets, and donated items locally in a 24/7 drop-box or via shipments to their mailing center in Lehi, Utah. They have set up a special charity flat rate label for $20 for 50lbs with UPS. Additionally, any items you order online merchants can be shipped directly to their location. As trucks are filled, they are sent to California. As of the writing of this article, 5 trucks have made the trip from Utah to California.

Most recently, on February 11, 2025, the organization hung out with student-athletes at the University of Utah as they spent an evening making blankets to donate. The Quilt Counter hit 55,000 that night.

Coming soon, Wrap the World in Quilts is partnering with Windham Fabrics at QuiltCon, a modern quilting event, where you can bring a quilt to donate, and or pick up some fabric packs to make a block or two to collaborate on a quilt being donated. QuiltCon is held from February 20-23, 2025 in Phoenix, AZ.
